Under 13's v Mid Glamorgan U 13's
Ystradfechan, Treorchy on Sunday 6th May 2007
Losing the toss
the League were asked to bat and captain Gareth George (Llangennech)
and Miles Murphy (Gorseinon) got off to a brisk start being harsh on
anything short, but Mid Glam hit back getting both openers and
Cameron Protheroe (Mumbles) in quick succession to leave the league
in a spot of bother but good partnerships between firstly Owen
Morgan (Llangennech) and Rhys Matthews (Gorseinon), and then Owen
Morgan and Gethin Long (Llangennech) repaired some of the damage.
The league threatened to pull away on several occasions but good
bowling and a slow outfield kept pegging them back. It was only when
Sam Davies (Gowerton), Thomas Carey (Pontarddulais) and Ian Coates
(Civil Service) came in that the league really started to get going
and they got the score up toward 150 with the league closing on 141
– 9. This was a very creditable performance on a very big ground
with what proved to be a more difficult wicket than first thought.
With 142 to
chase Mid Glam set off as if they wanted to get the game over in 10
overs with both openers striking the ball well, they rattled along
at a rate of well over 5 an over. Under extreme pressure from the
opening batsmen both league Thomas Carey and Chris Jenkins (Gorseinon)
kept their discipline and to their credit both openers were removed
in the space of 5 balls. The score went from 48 – 0 to 49 – 2 and
the league never looked back. Ian Coates with two wickets, Sam
Davies one and an excellent bit of fielding which produced a run out
kept the pressure on.
briefly threatened to rally but the introduction of the left arm
spin of Owen Morgan bowling in tandem with Gethin Long put an end to
the resistance. Gethin bowled a very tight line and length which
stopped Mid Glam scoring and Owen bowled superbly taking the last 4
wickets to finish with 2.5 – 1 – 1 – 4.
A mention here
to wicket keeper David Phillips (Mumbles) who was very good all day
and capped his performance with a very sharp stumping off Owen. Mid
Glam ended 90 all out and a 51 run win was recorded. A large part of
this performance was the way the side worked as a unit the team
spirit was excellent throughout and that really pulled them through
in the early part of the Mid Glam innings.
This was a very
good performance against a very good Mid Glam side, we are really
looking forward to the return match later in the year. We must now
build on this when we take on Pembroke this Sunday at Gorseinon CC.
Start time is 1230 hrs for anyone who wants to come along.
