South Wales Junior Cricket League Under 12's v Mid Glamorgan Under 12's
Played at Skewen Cricket Club on Sunday 6th August 2006
Match report by Peter Williams
Winning the toss and batting, the league got off to a flyer with Cameron Bamford (BSC Port Talbot) hitting the ball well but they lost Jamie
Rutherford (Skewen) then Cameron and James Taube ( Llangennech) then Ben Roberts (Gorseinon) and were struggling on 54 for 4 at the drinks interval.
But then an excellent partnership between skipper Rhodri Davies (Ammanford) and Ian Coates (Civil Service), with Ian in particular scoring freely and he was unlucky to fall eight short of his 50 but a partnership of 53 had repaired the damage. Then another stand of 40 between Rhodri and Tom Carey (Pontarddulais) was only broken when Rhodri was run out for a very good 32 the league's innings closed on 155 - 9 off their 40 overs.
Mid Glam also got off to a fast start but were pegged back initially by Luke Martin (Skewen) and Tom Carey but then an excellent spell by Liam Doran
(Llangennech) of 4 ovrs 2 for 5 reall pegged them back. In between some fine fielding By Cameron Bamford had accounted for Mid Glam skipper Matthew Davies.
Then the two spinners Rhodri Davies and Miles Murphy (Gorseinon) bowling in tandem tightened things right up allowing Liam Doran and Luke
Martin to bowl the last eight with Mid Glam needing 5 an over. Liam removed danger man Alex Griffiths thanks to am excellent catch in the slips by Tom Carey.
Mid Glam never gave up and at the start of the last over they needed 6 to win. Getting a bye off the first ball then a good one from Luke meant
they wanted 5 off four two superb pieces of work by Keeper James Taube stopped them in their tracks, first the ball stopped at the base of the
stumps and a dive from James to push the ball against the base beat the batsman. Then an attempt to steal a bye resulted in a direct hit from James
and Mid Glam were all out in a fantastic match played in excellent spirit.
The league side did themselves proud against a very good Mid Glam side. The performance in the field was excellent and they were very well led by Rhodri whose imaginative field placings in the last few overs, when it was very tight, meant that Mid Glam could never quite get that 5 an over they needed.
Thanks to the Skewen club for being excellent hosts and especially the tea ladies who did us proud.
